11th Annual Nativity Exhibit: "Advent"...Anticipation, Expectation, Preparation! Curator: Ellen Mintz. Sunday, December 3 to Wednesday, December 21. These are the feelings associated with many great events in life- the first day of school, graduation, a wedding, the birth of a child. Society, institutions, and families try to create circumstances and ceremonies to help people meet important events. This is the purpose of Advent. To help us anticipate, expect, and prepare for the Christmas miracle celebrated every year. In 2017 our Nativity Exhibit features the season of Advent. In addition to displays of nativity sets from around the world, we are showing Advent calendars, Advent wreaths, and other ways of preparing for the birth of Christ. And as we do every year, we find new perspectives on the Christmas story. This most sacred season is really about the human experience of waiting. Please join us as we prepare for the birth of Christ. We welcome school groups, families, prayer groups and individuals to prepare for the season with us. Please call to reserve a time for a tour and program designed to celebrate this year's exhibit.

A Silent Contemplative Advent Retreat with James Finley, PhD. Following the Mystics on the Healing Path of Experiential Salvation. 7:00pm Friday, December 8 to 1:30pm Sunday, December 10. A silent weekend Advent retreat devoted to exploring passages in the writings of the Christian mystics and related sources that help us to be healed from the suffering that flows in our estrangement from God's presence in our lives. We will pay close attention to passages in which the mystics help us to to pray, meditate and live in ways that opens and then heals the sweet wound of unconsummated longings for God that incarnate and echo with God's infinite longings for us. And we will see how this healing journey inspires, even impels us, to be lovingly present to others in ways that helps them to experience God's healing presence in their lives, so they in turn might pass on the contagious energy of experiential salvation to others. Practical examples taken from daily life and guidelines in the foundational aspects of prayer and meditation will be provided. The weekend will include periods of shared silent meditation and prayer and an opportunity to discuss the themes presented. Very limited space remaining. Cost: per person/shared $340; single room $460. Commuter: $250 includes all meals & presentations

Mere Spirituality: The Spiritual Life According to Henri Nouwen

Friday, November 24 - Sunday, November 26, 2017

Room, board, tuition: $250 single, $200 each shared

Retreat Description: As a prolific writer, Nouwen addressed a slew of wide-ranging topics, but only insofar as they bore directly upon his main thrust-our life in the Spirit. Never did he stray from this sole emphasis! To the most basic question, "what constitutes the very essence of our spiritual life," Nouwen's conceptual trilogy (Solitude, Community, Ministry) provides the most solid answer as it represents a balanced conception of what authentic spirituality is about. It is spirituality pure and simple, without the unwanted trappings: mere spirituality indeed! This retreat focuses on Nouwen's own articulation of the substance of our spiritual life. Presenter: Wil Hernandez

The homilies and writings of Pope Francis will provide inspiration for our reflections on the mercy of Christ that works through us as sacrament-persons. Time will also be devoted to exploring pitfalls in our ministerial style with particular focus on compassion fatigue, a form of ministry burnout. (This retreat was previously offered March 6-10.) En nuestro caso, no tenemos que esperar siglos para su venida. Los que han ansiado la venida del Senior siempre han estado listos para el encuentro con el Amado. New Year's Retreat: Singing the Music of the Incarnation

Friday, December 29 - Tuesday, January 2, 2018

Room, board, tuition: $330 single, $300 each shared

Retreat Description: It is appropriate to ponder the gift of the Incarnation and its impact on our personal lives at this time of the year. The presenter will share insights from a French Benedictine nun, musician, and philosopher: Elisabeth-Paule Labat (1897-1975), drawing from her books in English: The Presence of God (Paulist, 1980) and The Song that I Am: On the Mystery of Music (Cistercian Publications, 2014). A glimpse of her theology can be found in a passage from her first book: "By the mystery of the incarnation, our human nature as been assumed and implicitly saved by the Word of God. We give our consent to this, echoing and extending the fiat of the Virgin and the whole Church, and the Word made flesh assumes our person He, as it were, accepts responsibility for the whole of our being and our entire destiny." (The Song That I Am is available in the Abbey bookstore.) Presenter: Fr. Francis Benedict, O.S.B.
