1.         Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs:  “The Last Days - The Passion and Death of Jesus the Christ” to be Available Online

Please note that public performances have now been cancelled, but there will be two special online screenings: Palm Sunday, April 5, and Holy Thursday, April 9.  Directors and stars Jonathan Roumie and Maria Vargo will answer questions and pray with the audience live before presenting last year’s taping of the show.  The show will then be available to stream on demand after Holy Thursday.  Details on what time and where to stream the show are still being worked out. 3.         International Catholic Stewardship Council:  Annual Conference, “Encounter!  Meeting Jesus on Higher Ground,” Sunday, September 27, through Wednesday, September 30, in Anaheim; Discounted Rate Available through Sunday, April 12

The International Catholic Stewardship Council is holding its annual conference.  “Encounter!  Meeting Jesus on Higher Ground,” will be held from Sunday, September 27, through Wednesday, September 30, at the Hilton Anaheim Hotel at 777 Convention Way in Anaheim.  For Members of the Council, early registration (through Sunday, April 12) is $499 per person.  Non-member registration is $1,495 per person.  The membership commitment ranges from $180 to $540 depending on the size of the organization (as gauged by number of families).  There is also a pre-conference program, the Council’s Forum for Catholic Foundations for $149 (with conference registration) or $495 (without conference registration). 4.         Catholic Volunteer Network:  “Choose Service” Campaign Videos; Celebrating National Volunteer Week, Sunday, April 19, through Saturday, April 25

Catholic Volunteer Network includes 185 full-time, faith-based service organizations.  Their 28,000 volunteers serve across the country and around the world.  Founded in 1963, it connects people who want to serve with the faith-based organizations that have service openings that fit their needs and talents.  They also offer an interactive database to refine searches by type of ministry, ministry site, length of service, and other parameters.  For its 50th anniversary in 2013, Catholic Volunteer Network commissioned a study by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate to understand the long-term impact of volunteer service on the volunteers themselves, on the church, and on society as a whole. 5.         Emmaus Spiritual Ministries in Orange:  Enrichment for Spiritual Directors through Saturday, June 20

Emmaus Spiritual Ministries, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, is sponsoring the following events.  All sessions will be held at St. Joseph Center at 434 S. Batavia St. in Orange.  “The Sojourner’s Well:  Refreshment for Spiritual Directors” is a nine-part series of sessions for experienced spiritual directors.  The sessions will address three themes:  companioning a diverse community; spiritual directors engaging the creative spirit within; and companioning others to realizing the fullness of God’s love.  Sessions have already started, and people are invited to all remaining sessions, or they may register for individual sessions. 7.         Pauline Center for Media Studies in Culver City:  Calendar of Events

Pauline Center for Media Studies in Culver City is sponsoring the following events:

National Film Retreat.  Friday, July 17, through Sunday, July 19.  This unique retreat experience takes participants on a journey through cinema to reflect together on our common human experience and how life creates history and the need for memory in our storytelling, a theme based on Pope Francis' 2020 World Communications Day message. Advanced Course in Media Literacy and Faith Formation.  Sunday, July 19, through Saturday, July 25.  This is an advanced certification course through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for teachers, catechists, ministers, parents, and anyone interested in integrating media literacy education within a faith context.  It is a necessity within a digital media culture to develop and teach critical thinking skills and is an essential element of faith development.  Cost is $250 for the week, which includes meals. 8.         Mount St. Mary’s University; C.S.J. Institute; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet:  Certificate Program in Spiritual Direction Now Accepting Applications for Program Beginning in September

Applications are now being accepted and encouraged for the three-year Certificate Program in Spiritual Direction, which will begin in September 2020 at Mount St. Mary’s University at its Adams (Downtown) Campus in Los Angeles.  This is a program sponsored jointly by the University; the C.S.J. Institute; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  This three-year program covers:  Foundations in Spiritual Direction; Theory and Practice of Spiritual Direction; and Integration and Practicum.  Projected cost will be no more than $2,000 per person per year, with the understanding that if enrollment numbers are sufficient, the cost will drop. 9.         Catholic Communication Collaboration; Office of Life, Justice, and Peace; and the Operations Department:  “Catholic Social Teaching and Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” Free Online Course has Been Updated and is Now Available

The Catholic Communication Collaboration is leading the use of online courses for our schools and parishes.  One of the first courses, “Catholic Social Teaching and Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” was updated in March 2020.  Given the presidential election in November, it includes the bishops’ latest version (November 2019) of their document encouraging voters to educate themselves about Catholic Social Teaching as they prepare to vote.  This course also includes links to state and national Catholic conferences on additional voter information, as well as numerous episcopal and papal documents that contribute to the history of Catholic Social Teaching. The login section on the left hand side of the screen has fields for username and password; ignore those and do not fill in anything.  Just click on the “Login as a guest” button on the right-hand side.  That takes you to the Terms of Use.  Once you agree to them, you are directed into the course.

To navigate while in the course, there are “breadcrumbs” on the top of each page, a navigation path showing how you got to the point you are at.  It starts with “Home – Courses – Life, Justice and Peace - Faithful Citizenship” and then goes into the topic you are currently in.  You just need to click on the words “Faithful Citizenship” when you complete (or want to leave) a topic and return to the main page.  Topics need not be accessed sequentially; you can skip around.

Within each topic, there may be multiple pages.  They can be seen on the left hand panel, entitled “Table of Contents.”  You can click on the desired item.  You need not go in order; you can skip around.

12.       Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes:  Grounds are Open to Visitors, but Current Events are Canceled

Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes is closely monitoring recommendations for the coronavirus situation.  In the interest of the health and safety of guests and employees, the Center has postponed or canceled their sponsored retreats and events through Sunday, April 12.  Their outside grounds, including their labyrinth, remain open daily to individual members of the public who wish to take a walk and enjoy the serenity and natural beauty of the retreat center.
