6. Mount St. Mary's College: Ecclesia Program Workshops in July and August

Mount St. Mary's College offers its Ecclesia Program to benefit all church workers (lay or ordained, paid or volunteer). In the months of July and August, it is offering the following workshops. Please note that the August workshops are offered at the same time, so someone can only sign up for one.

On Saturday, July 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Ecclesia Program of Mount St. Mary's College will present, "An Introduction to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.)," a workshop by Fr. Ronald Oakham, O.Carm. This workshop, designed especially for new R.C.I.A. directors and members of R.C.I.A. teams, provides an overview of the entire R.C.I.A. process, including its steps, stages and rituals. This workshop will explore this process from the viewpoint of the ritual steps to see what the Church expects parish teams to do as they journey with newcomers to the Eucharistic Table. Fr. Oakham is pastor of St. Cyril of Alexandria Parish in Tucson, Arizona. For many years, he has been a leader in Initiation Ministry in the United States. He has served with the North American Forum on the Catechumenate as the Director of Institutes, Team member, and Board Member, and was the Director for the Catechumenate of the Archdiocese of Newark. The workshop will be held on the Mount's Doheny campus (near U.S.C.). The cost is $25 per person for each workshop (or $20 per person for groups of five or more people registering together). or at (310) 954-4126.

On Saturday, August 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mr. Michael T. Fike will present a workshop, "Service of the People of God: How to Be A Parish Server Coordinator." This workshop is designed for those who coordinate, prepare, and supervise the parish servers for liturgy, whether children or adults. Beginning with the vision of the Mass expressed in the Church's "Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy" and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' "Gather Faithfully Together: A Guide for Sunday Mass," participants will focus on the most important aspect of the servers' ministry: serving the assembly's prayer. After exploring the specific roles of the server in detail, time will be devoted to very practical advice on server formation and guidance, with discussion and practicum experience. Mr. Fike is a longtime parishioner and Liturgy Director of St. John Vianney Church in Hacienda Heights. He serves on the Liturgy Committee for the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Religious Education Congress, where he has been the master of ceremonies and server coordinator of the arena liturgies for many years. The workshop will be held on the Mount's Doheny campus (near U.S.C.). Cost is $25 per person, or a discounted rate of $20 per person for groups of 5 or more people registering together. The Ecclesia Program is also offering a two-day certification course for Dismissal Catechesis in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). It will be held on Saturday, August 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., continuing on Saturday, August 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and will be led by Ms. Catherine Shadduck of Padre Serra Parish in Camarillo. In this course, "Dismissal Catechesis 101," participants will explore the theology and process of the R.C.I.A., focusing on the critically important period of the Catechumenate, when the catechumen is shaped and transformed by the encounter with the Word of God, especially as proclaimed at the Sunday liturgy. The course will focus on participants' practical questions, and, over two consecutive Saturdays, assess the current state of their parishes' Dismissal Catechesis, composing brief proposals for concrete and doable improvements. Each participant will be awarded a certificate after completion and acceptance of his or her written proposal. Ms. Shadduck has had long experience in Initiation Ministry. She is the Director of Christian Initiation for Padre Serra Parish in Camarillo, and serves on the Archdiocesan Office for Worship Initiation Committee. Cost of the two-day course is $100 per person. For more information, or to obtain the flyer or registration form, please access:

This short course will examine the theology of the R.C.I.A. and the central tasks of the sponsor, to "bear witness to the faith" (R.C.I.A. #75.2), to be the representative of the faith community to a particular catechumen or candidate, and to be a personal liaison on behalf of that person's behalf to the wider parish. The course will focus on participants' practical questions, and, over two consecutive Saturdays, assess the current state of their parishes' R.C.I.A. sponsors, composing brief proposals for concrete and doable improvements. Each participant will be awarded a certificate after completion and acceptance of his or her written proposal. Ms. Gresser is the Director of Campus Ministry at Mount St. Mary's College, and instructor of the Christian Initiation Ministry Certification Course at L.M.U.'s Center for Religion and Spirituality.
