1.         Vocations California:  "Seeking God's Dream for Me:  Tools for Christ-Centered Decision Making" Retreat, Saturday, August 29, in Anaheim

Vocations California is hosting a one-day retreat for men and women ages 18 through 40.  "Seeking God's Dream for Me:  Tools for Christ-Centered Decision Making" will be held on Saturday, August 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at St. Catherine's Academy, 215 N Harbor Blvd., Anaheim, CA  92805. "A Marian Conference in Celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary"  Saturday, August 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Fr. 3.         Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles:  Paid Internships and Career Training Opportunities Available for People Ages 16 through 24

Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services (AYE) of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles has nearly 600 paid internship and career training opportunities for youth and young adults, ages 16 through 24, with emphasis on out-of-school youth, including high school dropouts and recent graduates in need of job training.  AYE offers an array of job and career services with full- and part-time job placement opportunities with business, healthcare providers, and community organizations.  Services will include the following:



?  Job preparation and placement with paid internships and on the job training

?  Occupational training and credential programs (e.g., nursing assistant, computer training)

?  Education services include tutoring, tuition assistance, materials, and books

?  Support services include childcare, clothing, transportation, etc.

?  Youth career and learning centers offer computer Internet access and other resources

4.         St. Peter Claver Church in Simi Valley:  "Harvesting the Vineyard:  How to Successfully Recruit for Volunteers," Saturday, August 15

The Faith Formation Ministry at St. Peter Claver Church in Simi Valley is sponsoring a workshop, "Harvesting the Vineyard:  How to Successfully Recruit for Volunteers," on Saturday, August 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Guest speakers include:  Ms. Christine Gerety of St. Monica Parish; Dr. David Lara and Ms. Jan Pedroza from the Office of Religious Education; Dn. 5.         Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University:  Annual Summer Scripture Seminar, "The Difficult Texts," Saturday, August 22

The Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University is holding its Annual Summer Scripture Seminary.  "The Difficult Texts" will be held on Saturday, August 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in University Hall.  The study of sacred Scripture is central to Christian tradition, but as familiar as many people are with biblical parables of revelation and hope, people are equally familiar with the Bible's more difficult texts.  How should people navigate these texts?  What does the Christian tradition of biblical interpretation have to say?  What are the implications for ministry and education in the Church? The Mission San Jose Dominican Sisters will hold a Discernment Retreat Weekend for single Catholic women, ages 18 through 40, who are considering religious life. 7.         Lay Mission-Helpers:  60th Anniversary Gala, Saturday, September 12, in Los Angeles



The Lay Mission-Helpers Association (LMH) is celebrating 60 years of sending and supporting Catholic lay people who have served in 36 countries around the world.  Founded in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, LMH will celebrate with a Denim and Diamond Gala at the Autry National Center on Saturday, September 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  The evening will feature a silent auction, cocktails, music, dinner, and the presentation of the First Annual Ernst Ophuls Award. 8.         St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Santa Clarita:  Iconography Workshop with Nicholas Markell, Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 18

St. Kateri Iconography Ministry will host their fifth annual Iconography Workshop from Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 18, at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Santa Clarita.  The workshop consists of five daily sessions, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and provides an intense hands-on experience in a relaxing and communal atmosphere.  Master Iconographer Nicholas Markell will instruct students in all phases of the icon writing process as they create the icon of the Virgin of Tenderness.  He provides guidance for the preparation of the icon board, transfer and etching of the icon image, application of clay bole and gold leaf, writing the image in stages using egg tempera and dry pigments, and fixing the image with oil.  He also covers the history and theological significance of the icon, the living tradition of iconography, and the vocation of the iconographer.  The cost of the workshop is $495 and includes all materials, instruction, and lunches. 9.         Serra Retreat Center in Malibu:  Retreat for Senior Citizens, Sunday, September 20, through Friday, September 25

Serra Retreat Center is sponsoring a Senior Week with Fr. Ray Tintle, O.F.M., from Sunday, September 20, at 3:00 p.m., through Friday, September 25, at 9:00 a.m.  The Franciscan Friars are sponsoring a week of rest, beauty, and community for people ages 55 and older.  Breakfast and dinner are included, along with evening spiritual presentations and optional Mass.  Cost is $450 per person for a double room or $550 per person for a single room. 10.       Metropolitan Tribunal:  Tribunal Fall Workshop, Saturday, November 14, in Moorpark

The Metropolitan Tribunal will be conducting its Fall Workshop on Saturday, November 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with check-in at 8:30 a.m.  It will take place at Holy Cross Parish in Moorpark.  This workshop, for marriage coordinators, submitting ministers, and Directors of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, will cover issues of marriage preparation (including dispensations) and marriage nullity (including impediments, dissolutions, etc.).  Please note that the recommendation of one's own pastor is required with the application.  Cost is $25 per person, and includes lunch. 11.       Pilgrimage to Mexico, "Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the New Evangelization," Monday, November 16, through Monday, November 23

Fr. John Montejano of the Metropolitan Tribunal will lead an eight-day pilgrimage to Mexico from Monday, November 16, through Monday, November 23.  Cities to be visited include Mexico City, Puebla, Cholula, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and Leon.  Cost is $2,395 for land and airfare from Los Angeles; or $2,012 for land only. "A Day's Journey into the Labyrinth" with Maggie Perrone, RN, MA. "Faith Support on Our Cancer Journey" with Sr. Laura Gormley, S.S.L.  Sunday, October 4,  from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  In our struggle with cancer, we often receive emotional as well as medical support from a variety of sources. However, our need for spiritual support from our faith community and from other spiritual guides who have walked this journey, is frequently unavailable. During this afternoon of reflection we will explore ways to nurture our spirits and seek divine guidance and support. Hearing the stories of survivors also offers us hope on our journey. "Journeying in Grief through the Holidays" with Sr. Laura Gormley, S.S.L.  Saturday, October 31,  from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Journeying through our grief for the loss of a loved one is a difficult task as we move through the many aspects of all the losses involved in our grief. During this time of year, the thought of facing the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday season can be an extra burden, filling us with dread. We will consider possible ways of preparing for and participating in these occasions while honoring the memory of our absent loved one. We will also reflect on our ongoing everyday experience of grief, its various dimensions and ways that may help us along the path.  Lunch included.
