1.         Diaconate Formation Office: Information Meeting for Men Interested in the Permanent Diaconate, Sunday, June 24, in Los Angeles at the Archdiocesan Catholic Center



The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting an information meeting for all men who are interested in finding out more about becoming a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.  Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate Formation Team will be present to explain the role of the deacon in the Church, to explain the diaconate formation program, and to answer any questions that participants might have.  Men must be between the ages of 30 and 60 years to enter the formation program.  It is important that men who are married attend with their wives.  The next information meeting will be held on Sunday, June 24, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Archdiocesan Catholic Center, 3424 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90010-2241. 2.         St. Francis Xavier Chapel – Japanese Catholic Center in Los Angeles:  New Itinerary and Lower Cost for Pilgrimage to Japan in October and November; Reservations Due by Tuesday, July 10

Fr. Doan Hoang, S.J., of St. Francis Xavier Chapel - Japanese Catholic Center will be the spiritual director on a 10-day Pilgrimage to Japan, visiting Akita, Hiroshima, Nagasaki (Hidden Christian and the Japanese Martyrs), and Tokyo.  The pilgrimage will be leaving from LAX on October 28, and returning on November 8.  Cost is $4,300.  Please note the new itinerary and lower price.  The Pilgrims will stay at four-star hotels; breakfasts and dinners are included.  Reservations are due by Tuesday, July 10. 3.         Southern California Christian Forum:  “We Are the Beloved Community” Gathering of Pastors and Ministry Leaders, Saturday, June 16, in Pasadena

The Southern California Christian Forum creates spaces for pastors and ministry leaders to engage each other by worshipping together, studying and reflecting on Scripture, sharing faith experiences, and supporting one another.  They are invited to the next gathering, “We Are the Beloved Community,” which will be held on Saturday, June 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Pasadena Community Fellowship, located at 500 S. Pasadena Ave., in Pasadena.  The texts for this month’s meeting is I John 2:7-11; and I John 3:11-18.  This workshop is free, and lunch is included.  Freewill donations will be gratefully accepted. 4.         Office for Worship:  Workshop on Implementation of the “Misal Romano, Tercera Edicion,” Tuesday, June 19, in Los Angeles



Implementation of the “Misal Romano, Tercera Edicion” (U.S. edition of the Missal in Spanish) began Pentecost Sunday, May 20. 6.         Office of Religious Education:  Early Childhood Catechesis 2018 Summer Specialization, Saturdays, June 23 and 30, in Long Beach

There will be advanced training for those who want to be catechists to preschool children.  This specialization will take place as a two-day series, held on Saturdays, June 23 and June 30, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., at St. Cornelius Parish in Long Beach. 8.         Soledad Enrichment Action Parents Helping Parents:  Parenting Instructor Training in Spanish, Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29, in Los Angeles



Soledad Enrichment Action Parents Helping Parents is an organization that helps parents raise their children peacefully and effectively and without violent parenting.  There will be training sessions for Parenting Instructors this summer.  Training in English is held in May.  Training in Spanish will be from Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29. 10.       Pax Christi Southern California:  Monthly Masses for Justice and Peace

Pax Christi Southern California celebrates a Monthly Mass for Justice and Peace.  It is held on the fourth Sunday of each month at 4:00 p.m., at St. Camillus Center for Pastoral Care (across the street from the former U.S.C. Medical Center).  The next Masses will be held on June 24, July 22, and August 26.  The Mass on July 22 will be followed by music and a food fundraiser to celebrate the feast day of St. Camillus de Lillis.  All are welcome.  Pax Christi is the official international Catholic peace movement focused on living nonviolence.





11.       Catholic Charities of Los Angeles:  Appointments on Temporary Protective Status Available in Los Angeles

Catholic Charities of Los Angeles is offering individual appointments to people who need legal assistance re-registering for Temporary Protective Status.  Depending on the level of service required, cost is $50 to $150 per person.  These appointments will be at the offices of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles (1531 James M. Wood Blvd. in Los Angeles). 12.       Parishioners Federal Credit Union:  Mobile Banking Application and Other Products Available

Parishioners Federal Credit Union was begun in 1961 by Msgr. J. Augustine O’Gorman, then-pastor of St. James Parish in Redondo Beach, to serve members of Catholic institutions.  It has since grown to be the largest Catholic-affiliated credit union in the State of California.  It is open to all parishioners in the San Pedro Pastoral Region, all teachers in Archdiocesan schools, and employees of other select Catholic organizations (e.g., Catholic Charities of Los Angeles; the Archdiocesan Catholic Center).  Parishioners Federal Credit Union offers loans for new and used cars, mortgages, home refinancing, and home equity lines of credit, along with savings accounts and checking accounts, with a special outreach for children’s savings accounts and teenagers’ first checking accounts.  One of the recent additions to its product line is its mobile banking application (available for free in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store), which includes the ability to deposit a check by taking a picture of it; to upload new billing information; and to manage debit cards (turning them off or on). Pauline Center for Media Studies in Culver City is sponsoring the following events:

Cinema Divina Mini-Retreats:  With the practice of cinema divina, participants will reflect on the Scriptures in the light of film and enter into the profound longings of humanity for emotional connection and the beauty of love. “Along the Way: A Pilgrim Walk"                 Sue Ballotti

Join Mary & Joseph Retreat Center in the second annual re-creation of the famous Camino Walk in Spain ~ a 4.5 mile walk through the streets and trails of Palos Verdes to the sacred grounds of the Retreat Center. As pilgrims, all walkers will be blessed, hike to Camino stations for reflections and passport stamps. If you have ever wanted to try the Camino (as seen in the movie The Way with Martin Sheen) but are unable to spare the time or expense, this walk is for you. Experience some of the highlights of the famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, on a half day walk adapted to our own countryside, neighborhood and faith traditions. All ages and faiths welcome. Walk is of moderate difficulty. Packing guide and instructions given with pre–registration. Water stations will be available along the way. Schedule for the Saturday walk: 7am registration, 7:30 begin walk, after the walk Pilgrims gather for a prayer service followed with lunch at noon. Please no dogs, strollers, skateboards or bicycles as parts of the trail are narrow, rocky and rough. Wear walking shoes (closed toe), sunscreen and a smile!

18.       Beginning Experience and the Office of Family Life:  Beginning Experience Weekend for Separated, Divorced, and Widowed, Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15, in Encino

A “Beginning Experience” weekend will be held at Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino, CA, from Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15, for those persons, male and female, who have experienced the “loss of a spouse” through separation, divorce, or death.  This weekend helps a person move from the darkness of grief into the light of a new beginning with renewed hope.  The purpose of the Beginning Experience ministry is to facilitate the grief resolution process for separated, divorced, or widowed persons, thereby enabling them to again love themselves, others, and God. 20.       Separated, Divorced, and Widowed Ministry in the Office of Family Life:  Cathedral Tour, Mass, Lunch, and Workshop, Saturday, July 28

The Separated, Divorced, and Widowed Ministry in the Office of Family Life is sponsoring a tour of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, as well as Mass, lunch, and a workshop, on Saturday, July 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Msgr. Jim Gehl will preside at the Mass.  The workshop, “Heart-Strong through Living Courageously,” will be presented by Ross Porter, Ph.D., M.Div.  The workshop will teach how to answer God’s call in new and heart-filled ways in the midst of challenges through trusting the Lord with one’s heart and being filled with the Spirit. 21.       St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Santa Clarita:  Iconography Workshop, Monday, August 20, through Friday, August 24, in Mission Hills

The St. Kateri Iconography Ministry will host their eighth annual Iconography Workshop from Monday, August 20, through Friday, August 24, at the San Fernando Pastoral Region Center in Mission Hills, adjacent to the San Fernando Mission.  Daily classes will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and provide students with a creative and hands-on experience in a reflective and communal atmosphere of studio time and prayer.  Instruction is given in all phases of the icon writing process, including the preparation of the icon board, transfer and etching of the icon image, application of clay bole and gold leaf, writing the image in stages using egg tempera and dry pigments, and fixing the image with oil.  Master iconographer, Nicholas Markell, will lead the class in writing the icon of Christ Pantocrator.  He teaches Eastern iconography from a Western Catholic perspective in an approach that explores the ancient art technique, the spiritual symbolism of the icon writing process, the history and theological significance of the icon, the living tradition of iconography, and the vocation of the iconographer. 22.       Pax Christi Southern California:  Annual Conference, Saturday, September 22, in Orange

The annual conference of Pax Christi SoCal will take place on Saturday, September 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at St. Joseph Center, located at 480 S. Batavia Ave. in Orange.  Presenters will include Marie Dennis, Co-President of Pax Christi International; Fr. Sean Carroll, S.J., of the Kino Border Initiative; and Monica Curca of Activate Labs.  At lunchtime, there will also be a silent “Stand for nonviolence.”  Cost is $30 per person, which includes lunch. 23.       St. Athanasius Parish in Long Beach:  Pilgrimage to Marian Shrines of Fatima and Lourdes Begins September 30



Fr. Francis Ilano of St. Athanasius Parish in Long Beach will be the spiritual director on a 13-day pilgrimage through Portugal, Spain, and France, with visits to Fatima and Lourdes.  It will be from September 30 through October 12.  The pilgrimage will end in Paris.  Cost is $4,207 (land and air).
